In 1772-1775, John FRAKE was living in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, where he was taxed. Bedford County, Pennsylvania had been formed from Cumberland County by an Act of Assembly on 9 Mar 1771.
There were a number of Frakes men, but it is not known which are John’s sons and which are nephews.
It is said that the family fled to Canada during the American Revolutionary War, as they were Tory sympathizers. It has been handed down that Philip was in Nova Scotia during this time, but it is also known that John, Jr. was a patriot and fought for the United States, so the stories are unverified.

In 1790, he was living in Nelson County, Kentucky. He was recorded as John FRAKES, Sr.
In 1792 and 1793 he was listed as John FRAKES, Sr. and taxed for 100 acres of land in Nelson County.
In 1795, he was taxed in Hardin County, Kentucky, which was formed out of Nelson County in 1792. It showed he had one horse and four cattle, but no land.
In 1797, he was taxed again in Nelson County for one horse, under the name of John FRAKES.
In 1805, he was listed again in Hardin County as John FRAKES, Sr.
