Philip Frakes
and
Phoebe (Case) Frakes

of
Nelson County, Kentucky
and
Franklin and Vigo Counties, Indiana

Philip FRAKES, born about 1763, Pennsylvania (probably in what is modern day Somerset County and would have been Cumberland County at that time), son of John and Catron (___?___)FRAKE/FRAKES. Philip died between the 1840 and 1850 census in Vigo County, Indiana.

John married Phoebe CASE 3 Apr 1788, Nelson County, Kentucky. She was born 1771-80, daughter of Nathaniel and C. R. (PEITY) CASE, a Dutch family. She died between the 1840 and 1850 census in Vigo County, Indiana.

In 1787, Philip FRAKES was in the Kentucky Militia along with Peter FRAKES (his brother or cousin), under the leadership of Captain George Rogers Clark. They were fighting what is recorded as the Wabash Indian. This is the first record we have a Philip.

On 3 Apr 1788, Philip married Phoebe CASE in Nelson County, Kentucky. Her father spelled his name Philip FRAAKS, in giving consent of the marriage.

In 1790, Philip was living in Nelson County, Kentucky. Kentucky was not a state yet, therefor the census takers of Virginia should have listed them, as Kentucky belonged to Virginia, but it was still quite a wilderness and they were not recorded. The 1790 census was created from the 1792 tax list and he was listed as Philip FRAKES.

In 1792, Philip was taxed in Nelson County, Kentucky as Philip FRAKES.

In 1791, Philip was listed as Private Phillip FRIGG in Captain Gray's Company of the Kentucky Militia.

In 1795 Philip was a witness of the marriage of Samuel CASE and Mary DAVIS. He signed his name Philip FREAKS.

On 27 Sep 1798, Philip FREAKS purchased 234 acres of land on the north side of the East Fork of Coxes Creek, Nelson County, Kentucky.

In 1800, the census shows Philip FREACKS living in Nelson County, Kentucky.

On 15 Aug 1800, Philip FREEKS and Jacob MYERS are mention in a land transaction in Nelson County, Kentucky, recorded by Benjamin GRAYSON, Clerk of the Court.

On 25 Dec 1806, Philip FRAKES sold his land in Kentucky to Richard DODD. Philip was listed as being from Ohio.

In 1807 there was a special census taken in Ohio. It listed Philip FRAKES living in Lemon Township, Butler County, Ohio. There were also members of the CASE family living there. He lived there only three years.

In 1809, Philip moved to Dearborn County, Indiana, which was just across the state line from where they had lived. Two years later this same land became Franklin County, Indiana. Phoebe's family also moved to the same area. Nathaniel CASE died in Jan-Feb of 1811, Franklin County, Indiana. Philip was appointed administrator of his estate.

On 18 Feb 1811, Philip FRECKS and Mary CASE were apointed administrators of the estate of Nathaniel CASE, deceased. Nathaniel was Philip's father-in-law.

In 1811, the land in Dearborn County, Indiana, where Philip was living, became part of the new county of Franklin. Philip FRAKES was listed on the tax list, as was his son, Aaron FRAKES.

On 19 Jul 1815, Philip sold 534 acres of land in Franklin County, South part of Southwest 1/4 of Section 30, Range 1, Township 10.

On 17 Jun 1817, Philip sold 113 acres of land on north side of the same 1/4. That was in Bath Township, Franklin County, Indiana. This was only 6 miles west of Butler County, Ohio. He was listed as Phillip FREAK, but signed his name as Philip FRAKES

On 17 Aug 1817 Philip and Phoebe FRAKES purchased 161.76 acres and 83.40 acres of land in Sullivan County, Indiana, very near Illinois. The land was in the northern part of Sullivan County, which is now a part of Vigo County. All of the land was deeded over to their sons at various times.

In 1820, the census shows Philip FRAKES living in Sullivan County, Indiana.

In 1830, Philip FRAKES was living in Sullivan County, Indiana. 1 male 60-69 and 1 female 50-59. Their sons, Henry and John, were also living in the county.

Sometime after the 1830 census, Philip and Phoebe moved to the Prairie Creek area of Vigo County. According to a local historian, Charles R. PIETY, Philip built and operated a horse-powered grist mill at Middletown (Prairie Creek).

In 1840, the census shows Philip FRAKES living in Prairie Creek Township, Vigo County Indiana. One male 70-79 and 1 female 60-69.
